A Nicaraguan journalist has died after being shot in the chest in a dispute outside a polling center where votes from Sunday's municipal elections were being counted.
Maria Jose Bravo, a reporter for the newspaper La Prensa, was killed Tuesday after leaving the center in Juigalpa, 140 kilometers southeast of Managua, and wandering into a fight between followers of rival political parties.
A former mayor of the city of El Ayote was among three suspects taken into custody in the shooting, which authorities say was the only violent incident to occur during the elections.
Although a final vote count has not yet been released, the leftist Sandinista National Liberation Front appears to have won the majority of the 152 mayoral seats at stake in the Central American country.
