Retief Goosen overcame a four shot deficit to win the season ending Tour Golf Championship in Atlanta, Georgia. The South African player had a surprising come-from-behind victory.
Goosen started the final round Sunday four shots behind Americans Tiger Woods and Jay Haas. But the reigning U.S. Open champion fired the low score of the day - a 6-under-par 64 - to finish the tournament with an 11-under-par total of 269. Goosen said he was surprised at the win.
"Didn't think I was going to quite win by four, but I just kept on playing solid," he said. "I got my breaks, I suppose, on 15 and 16 that probably put me ahead and maybe sort of put a mental block on the other guys that it's over."
Woods placed second with a 7-under-par 273, squandering a lead on the final round of a PGA event for only the third time in his career. A disappointed Woods had won 30 of 32 prior times when he held the lead heading into the final round on the PGA Tour.
"I'm just very disappointed because I was in a perfect shape to win the tournament," he said. "The only thing you could not do was give those guys hope by coming back. Goose took advantage of it and just played a great round of golf.
Woods has had just one victory this season.
The 50-year-old Haas was the oldest player ever to compete in the Tour Championship. But he fell apart down the stretch to close with a 5-over-par 75 and a tie for sixth place.
