More than 1,000 detainees have escaped from a prison near the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi. The massive breakout came as protesters stormed the offices of political parties across Libya.
It was not immediately clear if Saturday's jailbreak at the Al-Kuifiya prison was linked to those protests or if inmates received outside help.
At a news conference, Prime Minister Ali Zidan blamed the jailbreak on people living around the prison who didn't want the facility in their neighborhood.
Meanwhile, thousands of Libyans protested in Tripoli and Benghazi against parties, including the Muslim Brotherhood, they blame for the wave of violence in the country.
Some protesters stormed the headquarters of a Brotherhood-affiliated political party and another Islamist-allied party in Tripoli, destroying furniture. Witnesses say demonstrators also stormed a Brotherhood office in Benghazi.
