Hundreds of protesters blocked a bridge in the southern Iraqi city of Basra Friday, demanding an improvement in basic services in the area.

Demonstrators complained about poor living conditions, including a lack of electricity, while saying they also need more jobs.

Protests a day earlier in northern Iraq turned violent as security officers fired shots to disperse a crowd in Sulaimaniya. At least one person was killed and more than 30 were injured.
