PHNOM PENH —
Union leaders, factory managers and government officials were in meetings Friday in an attempt to find an agreement on a minimum raise increase.
Workers say they need at least $177 per month in order to keep up with the rising cost of living in Cambodia, a wage factories say they cannot afford and could drive them to set up in other countries. Factories have offered $110 a month, a wage unions have rejected.
Demonstrations over the minimum wage in December 2013 led to a violent government crackdown in January that left five people dead.
Rong Chhun, head of the Cambodian Confederation of Unions, told “Hello VOA” Thursday that some companies are now considering not ordering from Cambodia, due to the low wages and unrest.
