Amerikanci su u nedelju odali poštu žrtvama napada 11. septembra - komemoracijama i porukama da se nikad ne zaborave - 21. godinu nakon najsmrtonosnijeg terorističkog napada na američkom tlu.

U napadu je poginulo gotovo 3.000 ljudi, pokrenut je američki "rat protiv terorizma" širom svijeta i izmijenjena nacionalna bezbjednosna politika.

Obilježavanje godišnjice na takozvanoj nultoj tački u New Yorku, gdje su dva oteta putnička aviona udarila u kule bliznakinje Svjetskog trgovinskog centra, počelo je zvonjavom zvona i minutom šutnje - u 8:46 minuta kada je udario prvi avion.

Komemoraciji na memorijalnom trgu - spomeniku podignutom na mjestu gde su se kule urušile- prisustvovali su potpredsjednica Sjedinjenih Država Kamala Harris i njen suprug Douglas Emhoff.

Prema tradiciji, na njujorškoj komemoraciji nema obraćanja političara, već su rođaci žrtava čitali imena 2.977 poginulih.

Bratić vatrogasca Jimmyja Richesa, koji nosi njegovo ime, nije bio rođen kada mu je umro stric, ali je izašao na binu da mu oda poštu.

"Uvijek si mi u srcu. I znam da brineš o meni", rekao je dječak, nakon što je pročitao neka od imena žrtava.

Bonita Mentis čitala je imena žrtava noseći ogrlicu sa slikom stradale 25-godišnje sestre Shevonne, koja je radila za jednu finansijsku kompaniju.

"Prošla je 21. godina, ali ne i za nas. Izgleda kao da je bilo juče. Rane još nisu zacijeljene", poručila je Mentis.

Predsjednik Joe Biden je godišnjicu napada obilježio polaganjem vijenca ispred Pentagona, na čijoj je zapadnoj strani - gdje je avion udario u zgradu u 9:37 minuta - razvijena američka zastava. U napadu na sjedište američke vojske poginule su 184 osobe.

Biden, koji je u vrijeme napada bio senator, u govoru se prisjetio kako je vidio dim iznad Pentagona. Obećao je da će SAD nastaviti da razotkrivaju terorističke zavjere i pozvao Amerikance da se bore za demokratiju.

"Imamo obavezu, dužnost, odgovornost da branimo, čuvamo i štitimo našu demokratiju - demokratiju koja garantuje pravo na slobodu koju su teroristi 11. septembra pokušali da zatrpaju u požaru, dimu i pepelu", istakao je američki predsjednik.

Komemoracija je održana nešto više od godinu dana nakon što je Biden okončao dugi i skupi rat u Afganistanu, koji su SAD i njihovi saveznici pokrenuli kao odgovor na terorističke napade. Kraj rata obilježilo je haotično povlačenje američkih snaga i povratak talibana na vlast.

Biden je poručio da i nakon povlačenja američkih snaga iz Avganistana, njegova administracija nastavlja da goni odgovorne za terorističke napade 11. septembra.

Američki predsjednik je prošlog mjeseca objavio da je u američkom napadu dronom ubijen Ajman al-Zavahiri, lider Al Kaide koji je učestvovao u planiranju napada.

"Nikada nećemo zaboraviti, nikada nećemo odustati. Nema kraja našoj riješenosti da spriječimo još jedan napad na SAD", poručio je Biden.

Komemoraciji su prisustvovali članovi porodica stradalih, pripadnici hitnih službi koji su bili u Pentagonu na dan napada, kao i lideri Sekretarijata za odbranu.

"Dugujemo vam mnogo", naglasio je Biden.

Prva dama SAD Jill Biden prisustvovala je Shanksvilleu u Pennsylvaniji, gdje se srušio jedan od otetih aviona nakon što su putnici i članovi posadi pokušali da povrate kontrolu nad avionom od terorista.

Poginulo je svih 40 putnika i članova posade Unitedovog leta 93.
