Međunarodni dan rada protekao u znaku mimohoda i protesta radnika i aktivista u glavnim gradovima širom svijeta. Prvi maj se održava u znak sjećanja na dan kada su radnici u Čikagu štrajkom i protestima počeli da se bore za osmočasovno radno vreme. Prvi štrajk održan je 1. maja, 1886.
